Protectionism is one of the key elements that extended the Great Depression well into and through the 1930’s. Nations pulling back trade to boost their own companies and economies only serve to fuel a race to the bottom. Countries slit each other’s throats in a tit for tat protectionism trade war that takes the global economy down. The G-20 members kick the can down the road to the July meeting expecting by then to have more clarity on President Trump’s trade positions.
